Phillip T. Chigiya

Phillip T. Chigiya

It is difficult to attend GAs when studying in a Third world country.Earlier this year I was selected to be part of the IFMSA delegation to attend ICASA 2017 in Ivory Coast but I failed due to lack of funds. My motivation to attend the MM is as follows:

  • Noone in our NMO has ever attended a March Meeting
  • It is difficult to get funding, due to the dire economic situation in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has one of the poorest economies in the world today
  • I have gained a lot of experience having been in ZiMSA.I have something which I can share with other students having lead various projects in a country like ours.It will be an opportunity to learn from other Medical Students
  • Having served in ZiMSA for a long time, I believe I have what it takes to take a position of leadership in IFMSA in the African Region. Unfortunately I am not eligible to run for these positions as the IFMSA bye-laws require that one has to have attended at least one GA. By attending the MM I will be eligible run for a Regional position and make my contribution. It will also be an experience where I will gain more information on IFMSA.
  • ZiMSA is the only NMO which applied to host the African Regional Meeting in 2018. Voting has not occurred yet but in all humbleness we will likely win the bid. It is required that the host NMO update the whole region on the progress made in preparation for the ARM at the MM. Being on the OC if I win the scholarship and attend the MM 2018 I will be able to make the relevant updates that should be done. It will also be an opportunity to see how we can deliver best the ARM seeing how the MM will be organized. This will be really beneficial to ZiMSA and African Region
  • I plan to come back home and conduct various workshops on whatever I may have learnt at the MM
  • I have looked up the Visa requirements and it is very easy to get a visa from Zimbabwe to Egypt and comparing with the upcoming GAs this one seems to be the most feasible to attend.

The winner of the Erik Holst MM2018 GA Scholarship announced

Dear applicants for the Erik Holst MM2018 GA Scholarship,

Dear IFMSA Alumni,

Dear IFMSA members worldwide,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the results from the evaluation of all applications for the MM2018 Scholarship, provided by the Prof. Erik Holst Fund to a promising medical student, member of IFMSA, in order to cover some part (if not all) of the expenses for his/her participation at the IFMSA General Assembly – March Meeting 2018 in Egypt.

We received 69 applications in total, 69 excellent applications from all 5 IFMSA Regions. After a thorough, 2-rounds-long evaluation that lasted 10 days, we finally reached to the winner, who is:

Mr. Phillip T. CHIGIYA from Zimbabwe!

The Board of Directors of the Fund will be in touch with him in the following days in order to arrange properly how the scholarship will be received by its beneficiary.

We would like to take this opportunity and provide you with full details on how the whole evaluation procedure took place, in terms of transparency.

The Fund first announced the call for applications for the scholarship on November 18th, 2017 over the IFMSA General server, Erik Holst Facebook page and and provided a timespan of almost 2 weeks for receiving applications online. The first announcement was also posted on various IFMSA-related Facebook groups, and was followed by 1 reminder as the deadline approached. The deadline for receiving applications expired on December 1st, 2017 at 23:59 (GMT/UTC). The application procedure was done at our website by filling in an online application form, which included a CV and a Motivation Letter of each applicant as a prerequisite for application submission. Through these two texts, we would be able to better become acquainted with each candidate and take a thorough look into their aspirations from their possible participation in the GA, their vision of IFMSA and themselves in it, as well as their background and achievements both academic, professional and personal. As the scholarship aims mainly in students who cannot attend the GA due to financial constraints, special attention was given to any relevant information provided by the applicant. Applicants that haven’t attended a GA before, and those who had previously applied for our scholarship programme were also seen in a more favorable way.

After the 1st round of evaluation, a ranking list of all applicants was determined. Then, all applicants were arranged according to IFMSA Region and the first 2 of each Region were chosen, which provided us with a list of 15 finalists in total, because we encountered ties in some Regions. Then, a 2nd round of evaluation followed, starting with these 15 finalists, which led us to the final ranking list that gave the winner of the scholarship.

Finally, we would like to thank once again all those who applied, especially those who made it to the list of the finalists. We are sorry that we could not give more scholarships this time, but hopefully we will be able to do so for the next GA, that is the AM2018! We do encourage all of the applicants to reapply next time, when the call for applications is released! We will be happy to receive your applications once again when time comes!

Check our website for more news & updates on the GA Scholarships and other upcoming grants, as we will be enriching its content soon, after the scholarship is received, as we shall be following our grantee Mr. CHIGIYA and his experience at the IFMSA GA- MM2018!
